I like when a reader is engaged with the audience—have eye contact with the audience. I like personal anecdotes when introducing poems too.

There’s a Harvard professor (Allison wood brooks) who did an interesting study on nervousness. Her approach was to tell yourself “I’m excited,” and try to redirect that energy.

I have done the "I'm nervous" thing as well. Now I replace it with a greeting like, "Hello everyone." and then followed by a natural type of greeting that gets me out of "in front of the podium" nervousness. Like "It's great to see everyone" etc

A recurring difficulty for me is that the sentences don't map well onto conversational language, so there's no naturalistic way to shape the tone—phrases are reaching forward and backward without the strong arcs of sentences.
