Following the mention of the Wampanoag word for falling down or losing your land, in the Mojave language, according to poet Natalie Diaz, who is Mojave, “imat” means land or place and “amat” means body, and the Mojave commonly use just “mat” interchangeably, to refer to both.

My great great grandfather came from Cape Verde to be a whaler on a the Cape :) He was on one of the last whaling ships, the Pedro Varela. My family still lives there though I grew up on the North Shore, great to hear these poems!
